Custodians of the earth

Today is Earth Day!

Our home - earth - is also home to countless species, diverse lands and bodies of water, and a wide variety of geological resources. Earth Day was founded in 1970 to raise awareness of the need to protect the earth for future generations, and to encourage actions each of us - as custodians of this planet - can take to protect the earth's environment and resources going forward.

This year, the theme of Earth Day 2024 is "Planet vs Plastics." Plastic pollution damages habitats and interrupts natural processes, reducing the ability of ecosystems to adapt to climate change, directly affecting millions of people’s livelihoods, food production capabilities and social well-being. With this year's theme, the goal is to consider how we - individually and collectively - can reduce plastic dependency and make the earth plastic-free in the future.

Each year, the Presbyterian Church USA (PCUSA) partners with Creation Justice Ministries to offer Christian education materials to equip faith communities to protect, restore, and more rightly share God’s creation. In 2024, the partners offer Real Faith in a Synthetic World - Plastic Jesus, a document designed to help us think more deeply about the ways that plastics impact our lives and God’s creation. It is also intended to equip people of faith to take actions to address this epidemic in faithful and practical ways.

Take a look! And consider, how might we be good custodians of God's earth? 🌍
