In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr, all Mountainside students were invited to consider the following themes that characterized Dr. King’s life and work: Love, Justice, and Unity. Choosing one of those primary themes, students were asked to honor Dr. King through the creation of two-dimensional artwork, in accordance to provided guidelines.
Despite the short contest timeline, almost 30 students in five age groups submitted drawings and posters for the contest! The artwork was on display at the MLK Day of Service event on January 20 at the Community Presbyterian Church, and then in the Community Room (2nd floor) at the Mountainside municipal building, and members of the public, boro council, and community were able to vote on their favorite pieces. (Thank you to all voters!)
While all art submissions reflected the creativity, talent, and effort of the artists, the judges were forced to select winners from each age category – which was difficult given the quality of all artwork! At a reception held Tuesday, Feb 4, the judges’ decisions were announced.
Please join us in congratulating the following winners for their respective age categories:
Preschool-Kindergarten: Nolan Shanahan
Grades 1-3: Vrushabh Patel
Grades 4-5: Reese Goodwin
Middle School: Fx Kane and Ava Paone (tie)
High School: Emma Bracero
The art contest committee wishes to thank ALL participants at Beechwood, Deerfield and GL who created artwork reflecting Dr. Martin Luther King’s life. Each artist – whether named a first prize winner or not – should be proud of their work, which creatively expressed the themes so important to all of us – Love, Unity and Justice.
The art pieces continue to be on display for public viewing in the Community Room until the end of February, after which the artwork exhibit will be moved to the Mountainside Public Library.
